Boiler Repair in Port Jefferson Station, NY
Boiler acting up? Cold rooms, strange noises, water on the floor, or no heat at all? True Quality Plumbing and Heating repairs oil and gas boilers across Port Jeff Station and nearby towns. Licensed master plumber. Open 24 hours.
Boiler Problems We Fix Every Week
Most homes around Port Jefferson Station heat with a boiler. It heats water and a pump sends it through baseboard or radiators in each room. Many of these homes were built in the 1960s and 70s, and a lot of the boilers in them are getting old.
When a boiler acts up, it's usually one part, not the whole system. A pump that quit. A zone valve that stuck. A control that failed. Air in the pipes. We find the part, explain it in plain English, and fix it.
If your heat is out completely, see our No Heat Repair page or just call us now.
Signs Your Boiler Needs Repair
One Room or Floor Is Cold
The rest of the house is warm but one area won't heat. That's usually a stuck zone valve, a bad zone pump, or air trapped in that loop.
Upstairs Is Cold
Low system pressure is a common cause. A cold boiler should read about 12 psi. At 5 psi, water can't climb high enough to heat a second floor. We find out why the pressure dropped and fix it.
Water Dripping From the Pipe on the Side
That pipe comes off the safety relief valve. It opens near 30 psi to protect the boiler. If it's dripping, the pressure is getting too high, usually from a failed expansion tank or fill valve.
Banging, Gurgling, or Knocking
Air in the pipes, or a system that needs purging. Banging can also come from pipes expanding as they heat.
Boiler Runs but the House Won't Warm Up
The burner is firing, but the heat isn't moving. Often a circulator pump that stopped.
Water Under the Boiler
Could be a leaking fitting, pump, or valve, which is a simple fix. Water coming from the boiler itself can mean a cracked section, which usually means replacement.
No Hot Water From the Faucets
If your boiler makes your hot water through a coil inside it, that coil can clog with mineral buildup. The mixing valve on top can also fail.
Burner Keeps Shutting Off
Oil burners lock out when they can't light or can't sense the flame. Common causes are a clogged nozzle or filter, a dirty flame sensor, or a weak igniter.
Soot or an Oil Smell
Turn the boiler off and call us. Soot or smell means the burner isn't burning clean and needs service right away.
Boiler Parts We Repair and Replace
Your boiler is a team of parts. When one fails, the heat stops or the system acts up. Here's what we work on most:
| Part | What it does | Signs it's failing |
|---|---|---|
| Circulator pump | Moves hot water through the pipes | Boiler runs hot but rooms stay cold. Humming or no sound from the pump. |
| Zone valve | Opens to send heat to one area | One zone stays cold, or one zone won't shut off |
| Expansion tank | Gives heated water room to expand | Pressure climbs, relief valve drips |
| Pressure relief valve | Safety valve that opens near 30 psi | Dripping or spraying from the side pipe |
| Fill valve | Keeps system pressure around 12 psi | Pressure too low or too high |
| Aquastat (boiler control) | Sets boiler temperature limits | Boiler too hot, too cold, or won't fire |
| Oil burner nozzle and filter | Spray and clean the oil | Lockouts, soot, smoke |
| Flame sensor (cad cell) | Tells the burner the flame is lit | Burner starts, then shuts off |
| Igniter | Lights the oil or gas | Burner won't light |
| Primary control | Runs the burner safely | Red reset button tripping |
| Air vents and bleeders | Let trapped air out | Gurgling, cold baseboard |
| Mixing valve | Keeps tap water from scalding | Hot water too hot or too cold |
| Tankless coil | Heats your faucet water in the boiler | Weak or no hot water |
Oil and Gas Boilers, All the Common Brands
We repair the boilers you find in Long Island basements:
- Oil-fired cast iron boilers. The most common setup in Port Jeff Station homes.
- Gas boilers. Standard chimney-vented models and high-efficiency condensing models.
- Boilers with a tankless coil that make your hot water too.
- Combi boilers that hang on the wall and do heat and hot water in one unit.
- Boilers with an indirect hot water tank.
We work on all the common brands, including Burnham, Weil-McLain, Peerless, and Navien.
Pressed the Red Reset Button? Read This First.
On an oil burner, the red reset button is on the control box. Press it once.
If the burner shuts off again, stop. Don't keep pressing it. Every failed start sprays oil into the boiler. If you keep resetting, that oil pools. When it finally lights, it can go up all at once and blow soot through your house. That's called a puffback.
Before you call, check these:
- Is there oil in the tank? Check it with a stick if you can. Gauges can stick.
- Is the thermostat set to heat and turned up?
- Is the emergency switch on? It's usually at the top of the basement stairs, with a red plate.
- Is the service switch near the boiler on?

Repair or Replace Your Boiler?
Most boiler problems are repairs. A failed pump, valve, or control doesn't mean you need a new boiler.
Replacement starts to make sense when:
- The boiler is 25 to 30 years old or more and needs a big repair
- The boiler itself is leaking or has a cracked section
- Repairs keep coming every winter
- Fuel bills keep climbing
If you're at that point, we'll show you the repair price and the replacement price side by side and let you decide. See our Boiler Replacement page to learn more.
Prevent Breakdowns With a Yearly Tune-Up
Most no-heat calls in January start as small problems in September. A yearly tune-up cleans out soot, replaces the oil nozzle and filter, and tests the burner so it runs clean all winter. See our Heating Tune-Ups page.
