What Goes Into a Safe Gas Line

Sized for the load. We add up the gas every appliance on the line uses and how far it runs. Too small a pipe starves appliances.
Shutoff valves at each appliance so it can be turned off on its own.
Drip legs to catch dirt and moisture before they reach an appliance.
Proper bonding. Flexible yellow gas tubing, called CSST, must be bonded to your home's electrical ground. New York's code requires it to protect against lightning damage.
Pressure tested before anything is turned on.
Permit. The Town of Brookhaven has permit categories for gas line extensions, gas pressure tests, generators, and pool heaters. We file them.

Gas Pipe Options

Black Iron Pipe

Traditional threaded steel gas pipe. Strong and long lasting. Common in basements and exposed runs.

Flexible Gas Tubing (CSST)

Yellow-coated stainless steel tubing that bends around corners, so it needs fewer joints. It must be bonded to your electrical ground. Newer tubing with a black conductive jacket is built to better resist lightning damage.

How a Gas Line Install Works

1

Plan it.

We look at your meter, existing gas lines, and where the new appliance goes. We size the pipe for everything on the line.

2

Permit.

We file with the Town of Brookhaven or your village.

3

Run the line.

We install the pipe with shutoff valves and drip legs.

4

Bond it.

Flexible tubing gets bonded to your electrical ground.

5

Pressure test.

We pressurize the new line and make sure it holds.

6

Connect and test the appliance.

We hook it up, check for leaks, and make sure it runs right.

Gas Lines for Standby Generators

Long Island storms knock out the power. A natural gas standby generator keeps your heat, sump pump, and fridge running. These generators need a properly sized gas line, since they use a lot of gas at once. We run the line from your meter and handle the gas permit. Your generator installer or electrician handles the generator and wiring.

Don't Have Gas Yet?

If gas runs on your street but not to your house, National Grid brings the service line and meter. Then we run the lines inside. Switching your heat from oil to gas? See Oil to Gas Conversion.
