Long Island Storms Are Getting Wetter

In August 2024, a storm dropped almost 10 inches of rain on parts of Suffolk County overnight. In East Setauket, one family's basement filled with about 9 feet of water. In 2021, the remains of Hurricane Ida flooded Main Street in Port Jefferson Village.

Big storms also knock out the power. A sump pump without a battery backup stops right when you need it most.

What a Sump Pump Does

A sump pump sits in a pit at the lowest spot in your basement. When groundwater or rainwater rises under the floor, it fills the pit. The pump turns on, pushes the water out of the house, and away from the foundation.

Signs You Need a Sump Pump or a New One

  • Water on the basement floor after heavy rain
  • Damp, musty smell in the basement
  • Pump runs nonstop, or turns on and off every few seconds
  • Pump makes loud grinding or rattling noises
  • Pump hums but doesn't move water
  • Rust or corrosion on the pump
  • You don't have a battery backup
  • Your pump is many years old and has never been tested

Sump Pump Options

New Sump Pump Installation

We dig a pit at the low point of the basement, set a basin, install the pump, and run the discharge pipe outside.

Sump Pump Replacement

We swap the old pump for a new one, replace the check valve if it's worn, and test it.

Battery Backup Sump Pump

A second pump that runs on a battery when the power goes out or the main pump fails. The best protection during storms.

High-Water Alarm

A loud alarm that warns you before water reaches the floor.

Pumps we install: Zoeller sump pumps, plus other major brands, including cast iron models built for heavier use.

What a Good Sump Pump Install Includes

  • The right spot. The pit goes at the lowest point where water collects.
  • A sealed lid to keep out debris and cut down on moisture.
  • A check valve so pumped water doesn't fall back into the pit.
  • A discharge line that goes outside and away from the house. Never into your cesspool or the sewer. Most codes don't allow it, and it can overload them.
  • A dedicated outlet for the pump.
  • A high-water alarm.
  • A battery backup for power outages.
  • Testing by filling the pit and watching it cycle.

Test Your Sump Pump Before Storm Season

Once in the spring and once before hurricane season:

  1. 1Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit.
  2. 2Watch the pump turn on and empty the pit.
  3. 3Make sure it shuts off on its own.
  4. 4Go outside and check that water is coming out of the discharge pipe.
  5. 5Test the backup by unplugging the main pump, if you have a battery system.

If it doesn't turn on, hums, or runs nonstop, call us.

Sump Pump or Sewage Ejector Pump?

They look alike, but they do different jobs:

  • Sump pump: clear groundwater from under the basement floor.
  • Sewage ejector pump: waste from a basement bathroom or laundry.

If your basement pump is connected to a toilet or laundry, it's an ejector pump. See Sewage Ejector Pumps.

Sump Pump Questions

If your basement has ever taken on water, yes. Big storms often knock out the power right when the rain is heaviest. A pump with no power can't protect you.
