Leak Detection in Port Jefferson Station, NY
Water bill jumped? Hear water running when everything's off? Wet spot on the ceiling? True Quality Plumbing and Heating finds hidden leaks in walls, floors, and under slabs, then fixes them with as little damage as we can.
Signs of a Hidden Leak
Do This Simple Leak Test First
- 1. Turn off every faucet, toilet, washer, dishwasher, and the ice maker.
- 2. Find your water meter. It's usually in the basement where the water line comes in.
- 3. Look at the meter. Many have a small dial or triangle that spins when water flows.
- 4. Wait 15 minutes without using any water. Check again.
If the meter moved, you have a leak somewhere. Call us at (631) 902-0011 and we'll find it.
How We Find Hidden Leaks
Isolation Testing
We shut off parts of your plumbing one at a time to narrow down which line is leaking. Hot or cold? Upstairs or downstairs? Inside or outside?
Pressure Testing
We pressurize a line and watch the gauge. If the pressure drops, that line is leaking.
Acoustic Listening
Water escaping from a pipe makes a sound. Sensitive listening equipment picks it up through floors and walls so we can pinpoint the spot.
Thermal Imaging
Hot water leaks show up as warm spots on a thermal camera. That helps us find leaks under floors and behind walls without tearing things open.
Moisture Meters
We check walls, floors, and ceilings to see how far the water has spread.
Where Leaks Hide in Long Island Homes
| Leak | What causes it |
|---|---|
| Pinhole leaks in copper pipe | Age, water chemistry, and thin pipe. Common in homes from the 1960s on. |
| Rusted galvanized pipe | Old steel pipe rusting from the inside. Common in homes built before the 1960s. |
| Leaks under slabs | Pipes under concrete floors in slab homes, additions, and garages |
| Radiant heat loop leaks | Heating pipes under the floor that start losing water |
| Toilet leaks | A worn flapper that lets water run, or a bad wax seal at the base |
| Shower valve leaks | Water leaking inside the wall behind the shower |
| Water heater leaks | Fittings, valves, or a tank that's rusting out |
| Main water line leaks | The pipe from the street to your house |
Why Copper Pipes Get Pinhole Leaks
Long Island's drinking water comes from underground, and it's naturally a bit acidic. The Suffolk County Water Authority treats it to cut down on corrosion. But older copper pipe can still wear thin from the inside over the years, from water chemistry, fast-moving water in small pipes, or leftover solder flux from the original install.
One pinhole is easy to fix. But if you've had several, the rest of the pipe may be wearing out too. That's when it makes sense to talk about Repiping.
We Find It and Fix It
Once we know where the leak is, we fix it. That might mean cutting out and replacing a section of pipe, replacing a valve, rerouting a line, or repairing a fixture. You get the price before we start.
