While You Wait: Emergency Steps
- Water leaking? Shut off the main water valve. It's usually in the basement near the water meter.
- No heat? Check the thermostat and the emergency switch at the top of the basement stairs. On an oil burner, press the red reset button once. If it shuts off again, stop and call.
- Sewage backing up? Stop using water in the house.
- Smell gas? Leave the house and call National Grid or 911 from outside.
- Carbon monoxide alarm going off? Get everyone out and call 911.
