Water Heater Leaking Right Now?
- 1. Shut off the water to the heater. There's a valve on the cold water pipe at the top.
- 2. Turn it off. For gas, turn the gas control knob to "off" or "pilot." For electric, flip the breaker.
- 3. Keep water away from anything that can be damaged. Grab towels or a wet vac.
- 4. Call us. (631) 902-0011. We're open 24 hours.
Don't try to drain a hot tank yourself. The water can be scalding.
Repair or Replace? Here's How to Tell
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Water leaking from the bottom of the tank | The tank has rusted through. Replace. |
| Water dripping from a fitting or valve on top | Often repairable |
| Water from the pipe on the side | The safety valve is opening. Pressure or heat is too high. Often fixable. |
| Popping or rumbling sounds | Sediment built up at the bottom. Flush, or replace if it's old. |
| Running out of hot water fast | Sediment, a broken part, or the tank is too small |
| Rotten egg smell from hot water only | A reaction between the tank's anode rod and the water. Fixable. |
| Pilot light keeps going out | A bad sensor part or a venting problem. Usually fixable. |
| Rusty or brown hot water | The inside of the tank may be rusting. Often time to replace. |
| Tank is 10 to 12 years old or more | Replacement is coming. Plan ahead before it leaks. |
Tank water heaters typically last about 8 to 12 years.
Water Heater Types We Install
Gas Tank Water Heaters
The most common type. 40 and 50 gallon tanks are standard for most homes. Some vent up the chimney. Others use a fan to vent out the side wall, called power vent.
Electric Water Heaters
Common in condos and some townhouses in Coram and nearby. No gas or venting needed.
Indirect Water Heaters
A tank heated by your boiler. You get lots of hot water and fast recovery, and your boiler doesn't run all summer to keep a coil hot. A great upgrade for oil and gas boiler homes.
Oil-Fired Water Heaters
Some Long Island homes heat water with oil. We can replace it, or talk to you about switching to an indirect tank on your boiler.
Tankless Water Heaters
Endless hot water, heated as you use it. See our Tankless Water Heaters page.
Brands we install: Bradford White, A.O. Smith, and Rheem, plus Navien and Rinnai for tankless. See our Tankless Water Heaters page.
What a Proper Water Heater Install Includes
A cheap swap can skip important safety parts. We install yours the way the plumbing code calls for:
- Thermal expansion tank. Hot water expands. In most homes, that extra pressure has nowhere to go and wears out the tank. A small expansion tank fixes that.
- Relief valve drain pipe. The safety valve on the side opens if the tank gets too hot or the pressure gets too high. We pipe it full size down to near the floor so it can't spray anyone.
- Gas drip leg. A short capped pipe on the gas line that catches dirt and moisture before they reach the gas valve.
- Drain pan where a leak could damage finished space.
- Proper venting to the chimney or out the side wall.
- Gas leak test on every connection.
- Permit. Water heater replacements need a permit from the Town of Brookhaven, or your village. We file it.
How a Water Heater Replacement Works
We look at your setup.
Size, fuel, venting, and how much hot water your family uses.
You get the price first.
We explain your options and the cost before we start.
Out with the old.
We shut off the gas or power and water, drain the old tank, and disconnect it.
In with the new.
We set the new heater, connect the water lines, add the expansion tank, connect the gas with a drip leg, and connect the venting.
Test it.
We leak test every gas connection, check the venting, fill the tank, and fire it up.
Set the temperature.
120°F is a common, safe setting that helps prevent burns.
Clean up and haul away.
We take the old tank with us and file the permit.
What Size Water Heater Do You Need?
| Household | Typical gas tank size |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 people | 30 to 40 gallons |
| 3 to 4 people | 40 to 50 gallons |
| 5 or more people | 50 gallons or more, or an indirect or tankless |
Big soaking tub? Teenagers? We'll size it for how your family actually uses hot water.
Help Your Water Heater Last Longer
- Flush it once a year to clear sediment.
- Test the relief valve once a year.
- Check the anode rod every few years. It protects the tank from rust.
- Keep the area around a gas heater clear of boxes, paint, and gas cans.
