Heat Out? Check These 5 Things First
Some no-heat calls are quick fixes you can check in a minute:
- 1. Thermostat. Is it set to heat and turned up a few degrees? Are the batteries dead?
- 2. Emergency switch. Look at the top of your basement stairs for a switch with a red plate. Make sure it's on.
- 3. Service switch. There's usually a second switch near the boiler. Make sure it's on.
- 4. Oil level. If you heat with oil, check the tank. Gauges can stick, so look with a stick if you can.
- 5. Reset button. On an oil burner, press the red reset button once. If it shuts off again, stop and call us.
Never keep pressing the reset button.
Repeated resets can flood the boiler with oil and cause a puffback, which blows soot through the house.
If you smell gas, oil smoke, or your carbon monoxide alarm is going off, get everyone outside and call 911 first.
Common Reasons the Heat Goes Out
Most no-heat calls come down to one part. Many get fixed on the first visit.
The Oil Burner Won't Light
A clogged nozzle or oil filter, a weak igniter, a dirty flame sensor, or a failed burner control. Sludge from the bottom of the tank can clog things up right after a delivery.
Out of Oil, or Air in the Line
Running low lets the burner pull air or sludge. Even after a delivery, the burner may need to be bled to get the oil flowing again.
The Pump Stopped
The boiler gets hot but the heat never reaches the rooms. That's usually a failed circulator pump.
A Zone Valve Is Stuck
One part of the house is cold. The valve for that zone won't open.
Gas Boiler Won't Fire
A bad igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve, or a venting problem that trips a safety switch.
Power Outage Reset
After a storm knocks the power out, some boilers don't restart on their own. A control may need a reset, or a part failed when the power came back.
The Boiler Failed
Sometimes the boiler itself is done. A cracked section or a heat exchanger that rusted through. If that's the case, we'll talk through replacement and get you warm as fast as we can.
What Happens When You Call
We ask a few questions.
What's the boiler doing? Oil or gas? Is the reset tripped? Any smell or soot? This helps us bring the right parts.
We get to your house.
We're based in Port Jefferson Station, close to most homes we serve.
We find the problem.
We check the burner, the controls, the pressure, the pumps, and every zone.
We fix it and test it.
You get the price before we start. When we're done, we fire the boiler and make sure every room heats.
While You Wait for Us
- Keep cabinet doors open under sinks on outside walls so warm air reaches the pipes.
- Let a faucet drip on the coldest side of the house to keep water moving.
- Close off rooms you're not using and keep the family in one warm room.
- Use space heaters carefully. Keep them away from curtains and bedding, and never run them while you sleep.
- Never heat the house with the oven or a grill. That can fill the home with carbon monoxide.
- If a pipe bursts, shut off the main water valve. It's usually where the water line comes into the basement.
No Heat Can Mean Frozen Pipes
When the heat's been out for hours on a cold Long Island night, pipes can freeze. The ones on outside walls, in crawl spaces, and in garages go first. A frozen pipe can split, and it often floods when it thaws.
If a faucet won't run or only trickles, a pipe may be frozen. Warm the area gently with a hair dryer, never an open flame, and call us. We can fix the heat and the pipes. See Emergency Plumber.
No Heat Repair in Port Jeff Station and Nearby Towns
We're based in Port Jefferson Station and take no-heat calls in Terryville, Port Jefferson, East Setauket, Setauket, Mount Sinai, Coram, and Selden.
Most homes here heat with an oil boiler and baseboard. Many date back to the 1960s and 70s. We see the same failures every winter: clogged nozzles after a cold snap, sludge after an oil delivery, pumps that quit after years of running, and boilers that don't restart after a nor'easter knocks the power out.
